This is the best and easiest way to decorate your Christmas cookies! The result is cookies so beautiful that they look as if they were made by a professional but the technique is so simple you can even make these with your kids! All you need is some ready rolled fondant and sprinkles! No need to mix a dozen different icing colours and not a piping bag in sight! The premise is to use the same cookie cutter you cut your sugar cookies with, to cut some ready rolled fondant. Then you lay the fondant on your matching cookie. It should stick by itself but if you need to, you can brush a touch of water on the side of the fondant you will press against the cookie to make sure it sticks. Then dip a brush, or clean finger, into some water and wet the surface of the fondant, whereever you want your decorations to stick. For example, dab a touch of water at the top of a fondant iced tree cookie and then place a golden star-shaped sprinkle there. The sprinkle will stick to the damp fondant!
You can top this cookie tree with a gold sprinke star and add gold and white shimmery sprinkles to act as “tinsel”
I also love to add some sugar pearls for the “baubles”
This technique is amazing for creating “tinsel” on a tree cookie. For the cookie you see here I mixed some shimmery white and gold edible sprinkles together. Then I brushed water along the tree where I wanted them to stick and poured the sprinkles over. Then I tip over and gently tap the tree to remove excess sprinkles. The sprinkles will only stick the parts of the fondant that were brushed with water and the rest will fall off, giving you a “magic reveal” of the perfect cookie design!
This awesome trick makes the cookies an especially fun way of decorating with kids. It’s also virtually foolproof, so it’s perfect for when you want your little ones to be involved in the decorating but also want to achieve a picture perfect result!
It also allows you to get really creative with the designs that you create. I made these reindeer face by using a food brush to paint eyes, a nose and mouth with water. Then I tipped over gold sprinkles and created this gorgeous design.
Using ready rolled fondant makes things so much easier as you don’t need to roll the fondant icing out yourself. You will save time, energy, counter space and your fondant icing will be the perfect thickness and perfectly even! Ready-rolled fondant and Christmas themed sprinkles are available at major supermarkets in Australia, so they’re super convenient to pick up with the rest of your grocery shop :)
I have gone for an elegant and eye-catching, gold and white theme for these cookies, but you can use any colour of fondant and any colour of sprinkles when making yours!
You can also go a step further and invest in an alphabet cookie stamp, so you can create cookies with words like hope, peace and love, embedded in them. You could even write the name of your loved ones on these cookies before gifting them. It’s a really nice touch and adds some more sentiment to these beautiful designs.
I honestly believe this is the best hack for decorating Christmas sugar cookies if you want to avoid the mess, piping bags, long list of ingredients and are making a large amount for a party, get-together or just to share with family :)
