WHAT INGREDIENTS GO INTO A NUTELLA MILKSHAKE?
Vanilla Ice Cream
This gives the milkshake flavour and thickens the consistency. You can also substitute with chocolate ice cream or a blend of both chocolate and vanilla ice cream depending on the flavour you’re looking for. Of course, using chocolate ice cream will make it taste more chocolate and nutella, rather than just nutella, but either way is delicious so you can work with what you’ve got :) Since it is the main ingredient in this recipe, opt for a high-quality ice cream for the best flavour.
Milk
Adding some milk helps to thin the ice cream a little and ensure the milkshake is easily drinkable through a straw. I use whole milk for this recipe.
Nutella
If you’ve tried my other milkshake recipes you’ll notice this one uses 1 scoop less of ice cream than usual. That’s because nutella will also thicken the milkshake while adding sweetness and flavour.
OPTIONAL TOPPINGS:
Whipped Cream
The classic choice would be to top off your milkshake with a swirl of whipped cream.
Roasted Hazelnuts
I think roasted hazelnuts are such a nice touch of top of this nutella milkshake because they look and taste great. Plus they sit just perfectly on top of the whipped cream.
Nutella
I also piped some nutella in a swirl over the whipped cream for an added garnish, I didn’t melt it first - just put it straight into a sandwich bag with a piping nozzle and the consistency was naturally perfect for piping - but if your nutella is firmer then you can warm it up or just melt it and drizzle some over if you don’t want to fuss with piping :)
VANILLA ICE CREAM OR CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM?
As mentioned above, you can use either vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream or even a blend of both i.e. 2 scoops vanilla, 1 scoop chocolate.
I recommend the vanilla ice cream as it will allow the nutella to be the main flavour but if you add chocolate ice cream you will definitely still taste the nutella, it will just be more of a chocolate-nutella milkshake as opposed to a nutella milkshake…honestly they’re both delicious so it just depends on what you like better! :)
THE PERFECT MILKSHAKE CONSISTENCY:
Some people prefer their milkshakes thicker than others. In Australia, we have a separate term for this, with a thicker milkshake being known as a “thickshake”. Thickshakes are made with only a dash of milk, whereas milkshakes use a bit more milk and their consistency is a little thinner than that of a thickshake, making them more easily drinkable through a straw.
Everybody has a preference and it’s very easy to adjust the consistency when making your own. If you want your milkshake to be a little thicker, add some more ice cream and blend again. If you want your milkshake to be a little thinner, add a bit more milk and blend again.
It’s that simple! :)
CHILL GLASSES
You don’t have to chill your milkshake glasses but if you want your milkshake to stay cold for longer, you can pop your milkshake glasses in the fridge for about 5 minutes before pouring in your milkshakes.
MILKSHAKE TOPPINGS
The options are virtually endless when it comes to milkshake toppings. You’ve probably seen heaps of pics in your Instagram feed of milkshakes loaded with whipped cream, biscuits, chocolate chunks and all sorts of syrups and sauces drizzled over the top or dripping down the sides. When you’re making your own milkshake you can choose to pare it back or load it up with toppings. Here are some ideas for what you could use:
Whipped Cream is a great base for adding other toppings like…
Sprinkles
Shaved Chocolate
Nutella
Nuts
Chocolate Squares
Crumbled cookies
A dusting of cocoa powder
A Strawberry or Cherry
I choose to top this milkshake with whipped cream, nutella and some roasted hazelnuts! I also piped some whipped cream “roses” and a nutella “rose” because I was feeling a bit fancy!
