WHAT INGREDIENTS GO INTO A STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE?
Strawberry Ice Cream
So many people use vanilla ice cream when making a strawberry milkshake and I can’t understand why! Using strawberry ice cream not only gives a more beautiful pink colour but also more strawberry flavour which is what this milkshake is all about! Of course, if you don’t have any strawberry ice cream you can use vanilla but I definitely recommend using strawberry ice cream where you can.
Ice cream gives a milkshake its creaminess, flavour, sweetness and thickens the consistency. This milkshake uses about 1 pint (4 scoops/2 cups) of strawberry ice cream. Since it is the main ingredient in this recipe, opt for a high-quality strawberry ice cream for the best flavour.
Milk
Adding some milk helps to thin the ice cream a little and ensure the milkshake is easily drinkable through a straw. I use whole milk for this recipe.
Strawberry Puree
I have also seen many people use whole, fresh strawberries in their milkshake and of course end up with lumps that didn’t blend or an uneven strawberry flavour throughout the drink. Using a puree or syrup eliminates both of these problems as it incorporates easily and is already smooth! This ingredient also intensifies the strawberry flavour of the milkshake. I use my homemade strawberry puree for this recipe to create a fresh and REAL strawberry flavour which makes the milkshake so delicious but you can also use a store-bought strawberry syrup if you don’t have any fresh strawberries or puree on hand and it is a super convenient way of putting this milkshake together.
OPTIONAL TOPPINGS:
Whipped Cream
The classic choice would be to top off your milkshake with a swirl of whipped cream.
Fresh Strawberry
As you can see in the pictures here, I like to place half a fresh strawberry on top of the whipped cream to complete the look! :)
Strawberry Puree / Syrup
You can also drizzle some more puree or syrup on top of the whipped cream too, if you like
VANILLA ICE CREAM OR STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM?
I definitely recommend using strawberry ice cream, either store-bought or homemade. Ice cream is the main ingredient in a milkshake and is therefore where much of the flavour comes from so it makes sense to use a strawberry ice cream for a strawberry milkshake. This will give the milkshake a stronger strawberry flavour rather than a mostly vanilla flavour with just a hint of strawberry.
If you don’t have any, you can substitute with vanilla ice cream but if you find the milkshake seems a little more vanilla flavoured, I’d recommend adding a bit more strawberry puree, to your tastes.
THE PERFECT MILKSHAKE CONSISTENCY:
Some people prefer their milkshakes thicker than others. In Australia, we have a separate term for this, with a thicker milkshake being known as a “thickshake”. Thickshakes are made with only a dash of milk, whereas milkshakes use a bit more milk and their consistency is a little thinner than that of a thickshake, making them more easily drinkable through a straw.
Everybody has a preference and it’s very easy to adjust the consistency when making your own. If you want your milkshake to be a little thicker, add some more ice cream and blend again. If you want your milkshake to be a little thinner, add a bit more milk and blend again.
It’s that simple! :)
CHILL GLASSES
You don’t have to chill your milkshake glasses but if you want your milkshake to stay cold for longer, you can pop your milkshake glasses in the fridge for about 5 minutes before pouring in your milkshakes.
MILKSHAKE TOPPINGS
The options are virtually endless when it comes to milkshake toppings. You’ve probably seen heaps of pics in your Instagram feed of milkshakes loaded with whipped cream, biscuits, chocolate chunks and all sorts of syrups and sauces drizzled over the top or dripping down the sides. When you’re making your own milkshake you can choose to pare it back or load it up with toppings.
Here are some ideas for what you could use:
Whipped Cream is a great base for adding other toppings like…
Sprinkles
Shaved White Chocolate
Crumbled Nuts
White Chocolate Squares
Crumbled cookies
A Strawberry or Cherry
I choose to top this milkshake with whipped cream and half a fresh strawberry.
